The two disagree, and Chapter 20 says so itself: published biographies “may be different from the standards presented in this chapter” and members should “check with your chain of command for command-specific guidance” (p. 258). Neither is wrong — ask your exec which your shop uses.

Service and status decide which sections are required. Officers and enlisted members use ASSIGNMENTS; civilians use CAREER CHRONOLOGY. SUMMARY OF JOINT ASSIGNMENTS is officers only. EFFECTIVE DATES OF PROMOTION is military only.
